Celebrating Women in Mining

On Tuesday 25th June 2013, the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) held a Women in Mining Dinner in Canberra, where we celebrated the outstanding and on-going achievements of women in mining. The Dinner was a great success and the presentations led to some excellent discussion. There was a collective desire among all at the table to accelerate gender diversity at the company level.

The MCA’s 2013 Women in Mining Dinner also offered an excellent opportunity to discuss the findings of the MCA’s Workforce Gender Diversity White Paper. The White Paper was produced by the MCA Workforce Gender Diversity White Paper Reference Group, chaired by BMA's Donna Frater. This is a subcommittee of the MCA Workforce Committee, chaired by Downer EDI Mining Chief Executive Officer David Overall.

Speakers included:

David Overall, Chief Executive Officer, Downer EDI Mining;

Donna Frater, Principal Geologist , BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance;

Alison Morley, Chief Executive Officer, Brumby Resources Ltd;

Vanessa Torres, Head of Group Investments and Value Management, BHP Billiton.

Also awarded on the night were:

the MCA AICD Company Directors Course Scholarship (Winners: Vanessa Torres – BHP, Karin Baxter – BMA, Sabina Shugg – Momentum Partners); and the Thiess MCA Women in Engineering Scholarship (Winner: Elisheba Radke – University of Queensland).

A special thanks to the speakers and guests for contributing to what was a great night!
